How to record your voice online

Your browser asks for the microphone once. Allow it and the timer starts. Pause any time if you need a breath or a glass of water.

Stop when you are done

The take appears as a waveform, so you can see the silence at the start and the cough at the end before you listen.

Trim the edges

Drag the start and end sliders, or click the waveform, to cut the dead air. Press Play to hear only the part you are keeping.

Get closer than feels normal

About a hand’s width from a laptop or phone mic. Most bad home recordings are too quiet and too roomy, not too loud.

Pick a soft room

A bedroom with curtains beats a kitchen with tiles. Soft surfaces soak up the echo that makes a voice sound far away.

Leave a second of silence

Wait a beat before you speak and after you finish. It gives you clean handles to trim, and the fade at each cut stays inaudible.

Watch the meter, not the waveform

While recording, the bars should dance around the middle. If they hit the top on every word, move back a little.

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

No. The audio is captured and kept inside this browser tab. It only leaves your device if you press “Turn it into text”, which sends it to the speech-to-text tool for transcription.

How long can I record?

Up to 60 minutes per take. Longer recordings work in principle, but trimming and encoding a very long file in a browser tab uses a lot of memory, so we stop there to keep phones from crashing.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, in Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android. Keep the tab open while you record. The page asks the phone to keep the screen on during a take, but if you switch apps the recording may pause.

MP3 or WAV: which should I download?

MP3 for sending, uploading or listening. It is about a tenth of the size. WAV if you plan to edit the audio in Audacity, GarageBand or a video editor, because it is lossless.

The microphone is blocked. How do I fix it?

Click the lock or settings icon next to the address bar, set Microphone to Allow for this site, and reload. On a Mac, also check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone for your browser.

Can I record a voice message and send it on WhatsApp or email?

Yes. Download the MP3 and attach it like any other file. If you would rather not use your own voice, the free text to speech tool can read a typed message in one of 54 natural voices.
