Free text to speech alternatives
Most text to speech tools are free until the voice you actually want, the length you actually need, or the licence you actually require. Each comparison below is written against the competitor's own published terms, so you can see where the paywall starts and what the free option gives up.
Every page here uses the same structure: a quick answer, a side-by-side table, the decision points that actually separate the two products, and an FAQ. Nothing is ranked; pick the one that matches your output format and licence.

How to choose a free text to speech alternative
Start from the output file, not the voice list. If the audio goes straight into a video editor, you want text to WAV for a lossless master. If it is being sent to someone, a text to MP3 converter is the smaller, more compatible choice.
Then check the licence before the feature list. A generous free tier is worthless if the terms restrict commercial use, so read the terms of service and confirm the grant covers the work you are publishing.
Finally, test with your own script. Names, numbers, and long sentences expose differences that a vendor's demo sentence never will. Generate the same paragraph in both tools before you commit a long project to either one, and see the free vs paid comparison for what the paid tiers actually add.
